Description
A typical weekday ride, which includes three loops of Angels Creek and Buckbrush. Had trouble with the HR monitor toward the end. This is my first GPS ride and the altitude data does not look right.

Hi Steve, good to see you here. The initial altitude data is definitely off… it should be around 1100 ft according to the topo map. At the end of your ride, it does seem to read the right value. Was this the very first time you used the GPS?
It’s possible it went through some initial calibration – if it’s an Edge, it uses the barometric sensor in combination with cell phone triangulation to ‘calibrate’ the data at periodic intervals (the barometric sensor is very accurate but only in a relative sense). Btw, sorry I didn’t reply to your GPS question on MTBR, I just now saw the thread (I must have missed the MTBR email notification) – I have an Edge 305 and Vista – the 705 is supposed to be fairly similar to the 305 with respect to the barometer…
Yes Dirk this was the first time I used it. I’ve since learned that you have to give it a few minutes to find the satellites and determine the correct altitude. I just turned it on and started riding.
The device also ‘remembers’ recent location/altitude data when going through its setup routine after switching it on. I.e., on subsequent times you use it in the same rough area, it should take less time.
For instance, while I use my Edge in the Bay Area it almost instantly gets the right position when I power it on. When I travel to Tahoe or Utah, the first time I power it on there it does take two or three minutes.
