Description
As I missed the Fall Circus last week and was getting Coe withdrawals, I needed to get my fix soon. So why not get it on Halloween, also the last day of daylight savings time in 2009? Plymmer (Roy) had an intriguing idea for a ride that sounded tempting so I headed out towards Hunting Hollow on this foggy Saturday morning…
...due to a false start (on the freeway I realized I forgot a bunch of essential stuff and had to go back to start) I showed up late and Roy was already on his way.
My mountain bike manual says ‘chasing Roy up hills is not recommended’ so I decided on a different strategy and tried to anticipate his route (to Bear Mountain) and set out a (shorter) intercept course.
Well that plan didn’t work out that great; instead of staying the course I couldn’t resist the siren’s call of Middle Ridge. The payback for all this fun was called ‘Poverty Flat’.
I felt pretty beat and not up for Bear Mountain at that point. So I took a break and decided to climb Willow Ridge trail instead. That sure didn’t make me feel better.
Eventually I did recover pretty well and later almost cleaned Serpentine (just a silly dab at the start). At that point, I felt real good, since I knew this was coming:
While enjoying the thrill ride down Middle Steer, I considered later going up Jim Donnelly for a final run down Spike Jones / Timm… but after hike a biking the first few 100 yards with legs feeling like led and TahoeBC not being around to talk me further into this insanity, I turned around… it was all good.
On the parking lot, the red Valiant was still there as I expected. Roy was probably zipping down Dutch’s at that time I figured, and had a while left to go.
It has been a great day out there, and I didn’t think I would ever get a sunburn on Halloween…
Trail beta
As I did some trail work on Willow Ridge trail last spring, I was interested to check out its condition after the recent storms.
There are two medium sized down trees that block the trail – they could probably be cut and removed with a hand saw (but I’m no expert) – they’re certainly too heavy to lift by hand(s).
Check the two pictures below, these are the GPS coordinates of the down trees:- Lat 37.1738, Long -121.4710
- Lat 37.1729, Long -121.4659
Update 2009/12/02: see Skyline35’s comment below – the trees have been cleared, thanks guys!
Otherwise, trails look in good shape; cleared some smaller branches off south China Hole trail. There’s the one big log on Middle Ridge (some people may be able to ride it?). Some trails have serious rain (and hoof) ruts, but I personally like the added challenge.

Hi Dirk!
Nice Pics. Guess who gathered those bones a couple weeks ago? LOL
They were strewn about the gulch, likely washed down in the heavy rains
Mike
Sorry to miss you Dirk. I saw your note. It was a pretty harsh ride and I had my doubts about myself along the way but managed to pull though. I didn’t really think I could connect these 2 rides but it worked out very well. I like the mt. lion shot on my hood. Good information about the trees down. Maybe I can get to some of those.
Good numbers on the altitude gain. I think I had to much of a jump on you. Plus I took a shortcut myself (Eagle Pines Trail). That really makes this ride possible.
Roy.
@Mike: I figured someone did have some fun with them; they were lined up to form a word or so, though I couldn’t really make out what it said.
@Roy: no worries, and I probably didn’t have a 10k in me anyways – my short attempt on Donnelly to gain some extra showed me that much. My initial thinking was that Coit Rd > Mahoney Meadows > Los Cruzeros / the Narrows would be the fastest way to get to Bear Mtn and I figured you would not take the direct route – but then I got sidetracked myself ;).
Hi Dirk, your trail beta was put to use last Saturday (28 Nov 2009). I have knowledge of a team of highly mobile trailworkers who went out and removed those two fallen tree – thanks guys!

Excellent Charlie, I’ll update the text…
