Description
aka Hobbs’ House of Horrors…
I’ve been staring too many times at this impossibly steep track of dirt in the sky to not want to try experience it at least once first hand, so I lured Tom into a ride taking us onto the fearsome hill. Here are his thoughts on the matter…
No, actually, I just wanted us to get as quickly as possible to the fine descent of Rock House Ridge, my new favorite downhill du jour! This plan would have worked out nicely if I wouldn’t have missed the turnoff to Black Oak Springs from Blue Ridge road, descending from Mount Sizer. By the time I figured it out, we’ve lost enough elevation though for my riding partner to balk at the thought of climbing back up to the turnoff. Is there something more to say about Hobbs, with its average grade of 26%? It certainly does push ones climbing ability, tire traction and mental sanity to their limits. And I would like to meet the mythical creature that can ride it in its entirety on a mountain bike.
So we carried on and decided to take Jackass trail – a mildly entertaining descent with enough spiky shrubs and loose corners to keep one rather focused. Then: riding down on Poverty Flat? Something about this ride didn’t feel right, but soon we came into very familiar territory: the creekside hike-a-bike and climb home on China Hole. Those last stinging little walls on Manzanita made me wish again to have started out in Hunting Hollow rather than headquarters.

Sustained and steep climbing. That’s Hobbs. Brutal. I’ve done it a few times. I’ve gone down it once and popped my tire on a steep and rocky section. It was difficult to change the inner tube since it was steep everywhere. It is very difficult to pass up Middle Ridge Trail to do Hobbs. You really have to want the pain.
