Description
After taking a bit of a break after the High Cascades 100 race and doing only a few select rides here and there, I find myself in surprisingly good shape (race shape + rest + beer = good!).
This means now is the perfect time for PR attempts. I hadn’t done Kennedy – the Hill that Taught me to Climb – in ages (10 months or so). My previous best was 38 minutes, this was with the Salsa. So today I took her out again to Los Gatos but actually didn’t feel too great during the climb and really suffered – it was ridiculously hot on Kennedy’s higher slopes, even at a relatively early time in the day, and the heat seemed to suck the energy straight out of my quads. But I was able to maintain a good pace and high heart rate and found myself clocking off at 36min23sec – new PR, yay!
I’d be satisfied with this but think I have to put the bar a bit higher now. Sub 35 should be possible, on a day with more tolerable temperatures. And with less weight on the bike – I carried two full water bottles (to combat the heat) and tool bag (was planning on doing an extended loop after the climb), and I was too lazy to swap my all-mountain tires out for my weight weenie ones (the Racing Ralphs). On the other hand, the lower part of the trail seemed to have been graded again recently (duh), which does make it a bit faster.
Anyway, the bar is now at 35 – but first I have to take care of some unfinished roadie business, namely a sub 20 on OLH…

Ahh… I have yet to check out Kennedy Trail. Since you brought up OLH, have you climbed Bohlman-On Orbit-Bohlman near Saratoga?
Yes, I’ve been on Bohlman/OnOrbit. It hurts just thinking about it. Must be the hardest/steepest local road climb… A nice way to loop it is to connect with Monte Sereno at the top (involves a mile or so of dirt / fire road), then descend Montevina Rd and end up in Los Gatos.
