Description

September 19th, 2009 was the day of the first mountian bike race at Henry W. Coe State Park in many years – The Henry Coe Mountain Bike Challenge. Arriving just after 8am, it was a good sight to see the Hunting Hollow parking lot full of mountain bike riders:

I spoke with a few who I knew including mtbguru’s own Dirk and headed out to ride the trails with a notion to photograph the racers somewhere out on the course.

I went Gilroy Hot Springs Road » Coit Road » Anza Trail » Jackson Trail » Elderberry Spring Trail » Rock Tower Trail » Domino Pond Trail » Cattle Duster Trail » Coit Springs Trail » Cross Canyon Trail to the intersection with Coit Road where I spoke with the course marshal – he said all had already gone by. That was a couple minutes past 10am; the race had started at 9am.

We chatted about 10 minutes. Then taking Coit Road, I short-cut the course hoping to get ahead of the racers climbing up from Kelly Lake. Got to the intersection with Wasno Road at 10:30am where that course marshal said 6 Experts had already gone by! Unbelievable that they could make that distance and those climbs in 1½ hours!!! Watching behind me, I rode along the course—the wide Wasno Road fireroad—to the top of Tule Pond Trail. One rider went by just as I got to the Tule Pond Trail, next along was Dirk:

.

Following soon after, Drew, who I meet on a couple Coe trail-work days:

I sat for about an hour snapping some photos. When I felt like moving on, it was Wasno Road » Wagon Road » Crest Trail » Willow Ridge Road » Hoover Lake Trail » White Tank Trail » Rose Dam Trail » Pacheco Creek Trail to the intersection with the Heritage Trail [2:00pm]. After a bite to eat, I went back on the Pacheco Creek Trail. My rear tire was going soft and at the last stream-crossing before Pacheco Camp, I pinch flatted. It was a short walk to the shaded picnic benches at Pacheco Camp [2:50pm] where I fixed it no problem though I felt I was in a sea of gnats!

At 3:30pm I headed back: Coit Road » Live Oak Spring Trail » Wagon Road » Wasno Road » Tule Pond Trail » Grizzly Gulch Trail » Gilroy Hot Springs Road » Hunting Hollow parking @ 5:15pm. Roy’s car was still there. Brian/knobs stopped by on his way to the Coyote Creek entrance where he was going to start a sunset/night ride. I thought the temps were surprising mild, it was a good day in the Park : )

More stories from the day:

Nice report – and data! Looking at the temperatures, during the time of the race (9-12pm) we had near-perfect temperatures… this was a nice surprise.
