Description
While a ‘spectator’ of the 2009 Donner Lake Triathlon, I took some time off to explore part of the Donner Lake Rim trail – the trailhead near I-80 (Donner Lake Rd exit) connects after a gradual climb to the DRLT, which is very well marked. Recently (and currently) a lot of trail work has been going on at the DRLT, and the results are fabulous. Great work by the volunteers! The upper/western section, close to the PCT and Hole in the Ground trail is a beautiful technical gem, incredible fun. Summit Lake and the surroundings are gorgeous, sporting great views on Castle Peak/Valley, Donner Lake deep below etc. Didn’t have time to go much further, so I turned around, put Grandaddy’s ‘Crystal Lake’ on the iPod and enjoyed a thrilling descent back to Donner Lake.
