Description

After riding Stanford Rock and the highly entertaining scramble onto Twin Peaks the day before, the plan was to do a ‘punishing’ ultra-epic today. Alas, as William Shatner says, it hasn’t happened. Feeling a bit lazy, we decided to take the Spooner bike shop shuttle up Mt. Rose / Tahoe Meadows – the 4th of July obviously being an even day.

Tahoe really has plenty of fantastic ride options, one ride I’d never done but had been eyeing for a while is this route of Steve Wolf: the Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT) from Mt. Rose to the Tunnel Creek junction, then the Red House flume trail to Hobart Road / Sunflower Hill, north on the TRT to Marlette Lake overlook, then down the TRT switchbacks back to the Tunnel Creek junction, then the Flume trail down to Marlette, North Canyon road back to Spooner lake.

That first section of the TRT never ceases to impress and entertain and I was looking forward to riding the later switchback section down (usually I go up this). The Red House Flume trail was rather uneventful, but the early season alpine wildflower display was impressive – Sunflower hill was bathing in mule ears indeed…

The Marlette Lake overlook and the Flume trail proper never disappoint either, even though we apparently hadn’t gotten used very well to the altitude yet and started to hurt pretty badly towards the end of the Flume. That short climb from the base of Marlette Lake hurt even more, but soon we found ourselves rolling down North Canyon towards Spooner.
