Description
Middle Ridge was fantastic as always but the climb out less so. China Hole is a nice climb but that last part of fireroad to HQ is evil – in particular with the gusting – cold! – ridge winds I was exposed to. Not exactly what I had in mind as a short ‘recovery’ ride after Sea Otter but hey one has to pay to play. What was up btw with the mechanicals? A flat and then my rear shifter/derailleur acting screwy the whole time. Seems the Yeti was suffering some post-race trauma of its own…
Route: the classic HQ > Flat Frog > Hobbs > Middle Ridge > screwing around near the creek onwards to China Hole > China Hole > Manzanita > HQ

Jeepers Tommy, I rode this today and about had a coronary climbing out. Granted, I’m no pro, but I fancy myself pretty fit. I took the abbreviated route (started climbing after Poverty Flat) and that was enough for me. I had fun on Middle Ridge trail, but the climb in and out seems a bit much for a nice, but not epic, trail. I did have a bobcat run with me for a good spell. I spooked it and it couldn’t figure out which way to go. It ended up on the trail, right in front of me for about 20yds. Fun. I read somewhere where this is the easiest of the Coe routes…. maybe I’ll stick to Demo and Wilder.
