Description
Awesome Sierra ride. Even for Bay Area dwellers it’s more than worth the ~3 hour drive I’d say.
The trail itself is enormously entertaining, and then there are the ‘granite playgrounds’: California’s version of slickrock, where you can toy around for hours if you’d like so.
The first couple of miles are on mixed paved/dirt road and just serve to connect the Lola Montez Lake trailhead (Soda Springs) to the actual HITG trailhead near the Boreal ski area.
Lots of short steep climbs and descents, with plenty of technical obstacles (rocks, drops, roots and other adorable stuff). Doing this relatively late in the season like we did means you’ll be likely to cough up a lot of dust but oh well, no pain no gain, and everything is still well rideable.
Don’t forget to check out the lovely Lower Lola Montez Lake towards the end.
We hadn’t done this ride before and I had downloaded it as a .crs file to my Edge 305, then in ‘Training mode’, selected ‘Do course’ (in 305 lingo) in order to find our way – works flawlessly with the resolution of the 305…
Here’s a crappy video® that can hopefully give you some impressions:
